Ian Dodge, NHS England’s National Director for Commissioning Strategy, paid a visit to the North East, to find out more about the Vanguard and transformation work in Gateshead and Sunderland.
Ian visited Rosewood Care Home in Bensham, to discuss the Care Home Programme with Mark Adams, Chief Officer for NHS Newcastle Gateshead CCG and partners of the Gateshead Care Home Programme including local GPs, secondary care representatives and care home directors.
Highlights of the discussion included:
- The importance of the Care Home Programme to the Sustainable Transformation Plan (STP) for Newcastle and Gateshead, particularly sharing information learned from the programme and applying it to the STP;
- Praise for the programme’s achievements, in particular the work done to make efficiencies and a decrease in unnecessary prescription costs in older people’s care;
- The innovation of the programme from its work to building local GPs and care homes relationships to be proactive in addressing care home residents’ medical needs, avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions.
Ian also talked about the importance of developing the workforce in the face of an increasing ageing population and praised the team’s work on this. One major theme from his visit was to emphasise to other areas involved in similar work, the potential improvements that can be realised.
Later in the day, Ian visited the urgent care team at Bensham Hospital, who work closely with care homes in the area. He talked with the team about their reactive way of working with care homes and the educational work they have done with care homes to help reduce hospital admissions.
Speaking on the day, Ian said: “It is inspiring to come to Gateshead today and to see what fantastic work is being done. I have been particularly impressed by the work done around the clinical model and primary care, with the strength of impact from the joined up teams working together across the patch.”
“I look forward to seeing how effectively Gateshead can share their success with other Vanguards and New Care Models on a national scale.”
