Patient information: options for the future of Grainger Medical Group

Grainger Medical Group delivers primary health services across two sites within Newcastle upon Tyne – Elswick and Scotswood.

The practice is currently operated for the NHS by Cruddas Park Surgery, which has a contract to provide the service until 30 November 2017.

We have listened to patient views from the survey in June and have taken this feedback into account by developing plans for the future of services in the area.

Two options have been developed to show how future services might look, after the current contract ends.

Option 1: Have one GP practice at Elswick Health Centre only

This means we would ask someone to apply to deliver services at Elswick Health Centre and the site at Scotswood would close. All patients would automatically transfer to the provider of the new contract or patients could choose to register with an alternative practice.

Option 2: Keep both sites at Elswick Health Centre and Scotswood GP practice

This is what is currently in place now. We would ask someone to apply to deliver a service at Elswick Health Centre and Scotswood GP practice.

Options considered but were not suitable:

The options that were considered but weren’t suitable are:

  • Have one GP practice at Scotswood GP practice only
  • Have two separate contracts for Elswick Health Centre and Scotswood GP practice
  • Close the two practices These options were rejected on the basis of the option either not being possible to deliver by providers (and therefore unlikely to succeed), services not being sustainable, and the premises not being able to accommodate a large list.
